Hiring a VP Sales: The Biggest Red Flag to Look For

Hiring a VP Sales is a critical decision for any technology business.

Candidates at this level will naturally talk about sales strategy, market positioning, team structure, pipeline development and growth plans.

But strategic thinking alone doesn’t prove someone can lead a sales function or translate that strategy into revenue.

One of the most revealing VP Sales interview questions is also one of the simplest:

“Walk me through your last three wins.”

A strong sales leader should be able to explain:

  • The size and complexity of each deal
  • The length of the sales cycle
  • The stakeholders involved
  • The obstacles they encountered
  • Their personal contribution to winning the business
  • What they would do differently next time

The detail matters.

If the answer stays at a high level, relies heavily on “we” or never clearly establishes the candidate’s role, it may indicate a gap between the strategy they can describe and the sales execution they have actually led.

This isn’t about expecting a VP Sales to operate like an individual contributor. It’s about determining whether they understand what happens inside the deals their team is expected to win.

Strong sales leaders can move comfortably between the big picture and the reality of an individual opportunity. They understand the numbers, the buying process, the decision-makers and the moments that changed the outcome.

Strategy may shape the direction.

But detail reveals the operator.
